Educational Initiatives

Safer streets campaign - part of Robbery Reduction Forum, run by Police Secondary School Liaison Officer to reduce street crime on the journey to school. Concentrating on developing agreements with local shops to act as safe havens for children who feel at risk. This also includes class instruction on avoidance strategies.

Woodberry Down contributed via photographic project siting problems faced on a journey between the estate and Stoke Newington School. Stoke Newington Media arts college, participated through sessions in the area around the school - concentrating on areas to avoid and thinking about personal safety.
Advertising campaign Haggerston girls school and participating students from other schools. A campaign managed by year 10 girls working with a graphic designer to run a competition to design posters. These were then shown on billboards and bus shelters in busy locations around the borough. Bikes were secured as prizes from Sainsburys.
Video consultation - a video to ascertain pupils concerns, views and suggestions for improved safety on their journey to school Haggerston girls - piloted here, but became contentious due to an incident that occurred near the school. Governors vetoed viewing of resource.
Linking schools to bike shops Letters sent to all bike shops proposing their inclusion in a project to promote cycling within the borough, each school being effectively linked to a nearby bike shop. Only received interest from London Fields Cycles who participated in a pilot several years ago with children visiting the shop and learning about cycling and cycle maintanence.
Cycle training - comprehensive cycle training programme - 2 instructors to 10 pupils, concentrating on the provision of 'on the road' training. First few sessions look at bike maintenance, control and safety, subsequent sessions on the road.
