Yer Bike Sessions 1 & 2

Back to Yer Bike Diary

The following is layed out ostensibly to print but the links are of course live. Please make allowances for the fact that some suggested URL's may now not exist !

Session 1
YER BIKE - SESSION 1 - HIGHWIRE - JANUARY 2002

1. Outline what today's session will cover:

Intro whole project
Talk about planning
Look at & analyse some examples
Itinerary for weeks ahead
Brainstorm bike topics

2. Discuss meaning & implications & differences between multimedia (own sophisticated interactive presentations, you know the audience) and worldwide web (less sophisticated, but wider audience and feedback)

- boring ? interesting ? compelling ? nature of computer games, effective & non-effective media. They are used to being the audience - now need to put their creative hat on and imagine what it's like to be the user in the process of creating the site. What will stimulate ? excite ? puzzle ? entice ? amuse ? fascinate ? interest ?

Computer & software as tools to collate & present meaningful info - using combination of images* / text*/ animation*/ sound effects* / video / soundtrack (*will be used in this project)

Lots of work to be done off computer first

3. Brainstorm types of things to be done before computer work:

Preparation & Planning

· considering the design brief (solution will include what basic elements and reflect what purpose for which audience ?)
· navigation (introduce notion of non-linear structure & depth of site &hyperlinks & usability)
· levels of interactivity (rollover buttons / making animations happen)
· research (libraries / internet/ visiting bike shops / interviewing friends, teachers, cyclists, shop owners)
· artwork (eg. painting / drawing/ sketching / etching / computer graphics / collages)
· taking digital / manual photos (bike shops / people in bike shops / cyclists on street / routes)
· scanning
· collecting sound (sound effects off web)
· sketching page designs on paper
· pairwork & group discussions

4. Surf to give critical analysis (effective/ less effective elements) of various sites - in pairs - give marks out of 5 for:

· easy to read ?
· navigation / usability ?
· clear purpose ?
· effectiveness ?
· overall design / sound if any ?

5. Itinerary for weeks ahead:

Week 1 - 28 Jan - as above >intro whole project + brainstorm bike subject matter

Week 2 -- 4 Feb software introduction + practice exercises + decide on purpose & audience + give out design brief + assign pairs & topics + start overall navigation & interactive elements + start sketching out plan of web pages + group feedback.

Week 3 -- 18 Feb recap last week, individual pair presentations, planning as on-going process, begin artwork, sound, graphics, linking. By end of sesh will have whole project sketched out on paper for all to refer to.

Week 4 -- 25 Feb project development

Week 5 -- 4 Mar project development

Week 6 -- 11 Mar linking up & review. Sample audience, 2-way feedback

Week 7 -- 18 Mar finish off (act on feedback ?) and evaluate work

6. Start bike brainstorming…….

Session 2

4 February 2002

1. Recap on last week's main points:

- what's important in a web site ?
- how / where to research ?
- broad content for bike site ?
- what did they find out ?

2. Discuss design brief:

"Hackney Council has asked you to build an informative fun site to do with bikes. The aim is to provide local people - young and old - with a useful resource and encourage bike use throughout the borough. The site must be eye-catching, user-friendly and encourage people to come back (it's got to be "sticky"). We want the site to evolve so it must be designed in such a way that it can be developed further after the project & be easily updated."

There will be a home page + 5 main sections:

- SAFETY & THE BODY
- THE COMMUNITY & THE ENVIRONMENT
- D.I.Y.
- FUN
- FEEDBACK

Each section will be divided up into sub-sections:

- SAFETY - 2 pages & THE BODY - 2 pages
- THE COMMUNITY - 2 pages - must include info on local bike shops & cyclists' charter & THE ENVIRONMENT - 2 pages
- D.I.Y. - 2 pages
- FUN - 2 pages
- FEEDBACK - 1 page - must include email link

On each page there may be some but not necessarily all of the following elements:

- images (drawn / painted / collage / photos)
- text
- sound effects *
- animation * (*these are "the icing on the cake" - leave work on these till later)

In pairs:

- establish content of your subsection and what needs to be done to gather all this content ?
- roughly sketch how your pages will be layed out.
- consider links to other pages in the site / other websites ?
- present your ideas to the rest of the group.
- redraft each page on graph paper so that the general layout & site structure can be stuck on the wall for reference.

It's important to note that these plans may well change as the site develops and that's a good thing !!

Next week - once our raw materials are assembled - we'll begin the process of turning it all into web content using Adobe "Go Live " software.
