Web link and Cycle Training

Back to Safe Route Projects in Hackney

Cycle Shops in Hackney

One of the most successful projects that has received overwhelming interest and support from schools, young people and parents is cycling training. In this we have been helped by Cycle Training who have assisted in training young people in schools in Hackney in cycling skills and the basic techniques that lead to increased confidence on a bicycle. The support for this from children and parents has been amazing with a glowing report in the Hackney LCC August newsletter.

This has also led to a surge in sales of repair-kits, new tyres and brake-blocks and not a few new bikes as children have been taught about safe cycling-techniques and their parents have ensured that their bikes were well maintained or the correct size.

A question that every cyclist asks themselves is "Will a helmet protect me?" Obviously every parent does the same and there is a lot of research every year that says they do. At Groundwork we agree but we have noticed that this research is often funded by helmet manufacturers interpretation.

We believe that it is everyone's right to choose and in this we are adopting the same approach as the CTC, LCC, and SUSTRANS. By way of introducing an example of how complex this issue is we present a recent article about helmets in the New York Times which is an "Adobe Acrobat" file for you to read on the subject.

There are many useful bike-related links in our links page.

Groundwork also partnered Highwire (the multimedia resource centre based at Hackney Community College, Shoreditch) and funded an after-school club for students to build a website promoting bikes and bike use in the borough. Students from Haggerston Girls School and Homerton College of Technology for boys participated in the project and produced this site:
